Paypal no longer allowing me to use credit card without creating a payapal account.

I never want another Paypal account in my life and I've bought many stamps here without being forced to create a Paypal account. Why are they being allowed to block sales between sellers and customers here in this manner?

  • "Credit/Debit payments are processed through PayPal. However, you do not need to have a PayPal account to pay. On PayPal's website, scroll down and select the 'Pay with a Debit or Credit Card' option. If you do not see this option, click on the 'Sign Up' button, which should take you to 'PayPal Guest Checkout', where you can pay without a PayPal account, and will not need to create one. If you have any difficulty, please Contact Us."

Both the 'Pay with a Debit or Credit Card' or login option lead only to an endpoint where "create an account" is the only exit. I see no "guest checkout" no matter how I navigate the Paypal environment.
  • Not using a card associated with a paypal account, trying a brand new card never used anywhere.
  • Well, since this is HipStamp, and those are all PayPal issues, why don't you contact their support?
  • Did you activate the card before using it?
  • Dave, does the seller offer "Buy Now Pay Later"? This way you can send them a check, money order, cash, whatever to pay for your purchase. This way, skipping Pay Pal.

I'm not having any relationship with paypal, they are their own problem and cause sites like hipstamp bad PR. If hipstamp chooses paypal, then the paypal failures to respect the terms of service are for hipstamp to work out with paypal, not me.

I appreciate the helpful suggestions, Yes, I activated my card. I added a number of items to my cart , after 2 days about half have responded. I'll likely have to look elsewhere for these unpurchasable stamps since paypal won't allow me to use their system without creating a account.

Any suggestions on where to look for stamps online where paypal doesn't destroy the opportunity for sellers and buyers to commerce?
  • Dave, nope... sometimes you have to role with the punches.
You can arrange for alternate payment methods with some sellers (like using Zelle, or bank transfer, cheque, ). But the seller has to agree/have the capability to do it.
Credit Cards on the "micro payment" world are difficult because of the nature of those systems, and requirements for merchant accounts. PayPal enables the use of the credit card for sales as a "clearing house" for card transactions, essentially making it possible for anyone to accept a credit card payment. That process creates it's own set of challenges, but it does work (pretty smoothly) once it's in place as well. It's been a "defacto" payment system for online transactions for over 20 years.
Now, I'm not fan of PayPal, but until the internet adopts a different "default", it's likely where these payments will remain.
Your reluctance to create a PayPal account is solely your choice. You may be able to arrange different payment options directly with those you have bought from.
  • I appreciate your opinion but disagree. I have and will have no relationship with paypal. If there is an issue it's up to HipStamp to deal with or I cannot purchase from these sellers, which is fine. There are other sellers out there I can purchase from.

That said, this does look like a seller by seller issue. When I've contacted some of the sellers I've tried to do business with, now all of a sudden I have the option with paypal to check out as a guest. Others it will only take me to the "pay with paypal" entry point even if I've said I want to pay with a card.
  • WOW! Someone is angry,,, you already have the answer to your question, bite the bullet and Create a paypal account OR move on and buy from other sellers. Maybe this method works best and quickest for most sellers and buyers, so why should it be changed for one buyer? Unfortunately, not everyone can be pleased. Sorry it doesn't work to your satisfaction.

    Yikes!
  • I figured it all out and I’m not as bitter ! I gotta give time time
  • Yes, Paypal is the worst. Deal with them if you want to.
  • Yea the take your money right off the top the second they see it ask for your money good luck
