Modification to search boxes

I didn't want to post this in the bugs category, because it's not a bug, it's a feature, as they say. Unfortunately, it's an annoying feature that started with the recent changes to the site. I'm hoping the programmers can modify it. The issue is with the search box at the top, next to the HipStamp logo. The first time you type in that box it works perfectly. If you want to look for a different item, and swipe with your mouse over what you previously entered, the box flashes a line at the bottom that turns into a dot and the box goes dead! If you don't notice and start typing it ignores you. The enter key on your keyboard is dead, and the magnifying glass is also dead if you click on it. The only way to avoid this is to very carefully swipe in the box being sure not to leave the box. Then you can begin typing a new entry. This is not how a data entry box should work. It should function like the lower box on the page next to the "Seller's Username" box. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but it seems like a programmer thought this was a neat way to program the top box with a fancy flash of a line and a dot, but it's driving me mad. :-) Please fix if at all possible. Thanks.

Search box annoyance

That’s my major gripe with this New HipStamp, too. One thing I’ve found, before typing in a subsequent search term is to click on the X to clear the box, and there is never a problem typing your new search term.

But that is the furthest thing from an ideal workaround, as you now have to type in the country name and mnh all over again. Quite annoying if you are searching for French Equatorial Africa or Australian Antarctic Territory.

Of course, you could (and I do) copy and paste “mnh country,” but now you’re adding yet another step in what should be a quick and easy function. It should be simply double click to highlight the previously searched catalog number and type in the new number.
  • Quite frankly I have no problem with the search box. I have been using it for days without issue. In fact, some of the previous problems associated with it have been corrected. I'm currently going through my inventory listed for sale and comparing it to listings from others. I type US 308 and hit return. I then sort low to high which stays in place when I move between conditions. I can edit any of my listings. When done, it returns me to my corrected listing. I can then backspace and it brings me back to where I was before I made my edit. When I'm ready to move on to the next number, I simply click in the white area to the right of US 308. This places the cursor next to the 8. I simply backspace which erases the 8, then I type a 9 and hit return and my new results appear. This seems pretty straight forward to me. I don't know why you would want to clear the box. That would cause extra work.

I DON’T want to clear the box. The problem (and like many of the glitches mentioned in various threads, it is not a universal one; some people experience them to a greater or lesser degree than others) is that, when I want to conduct a search, the search box will not accept, or keep, any keyboard input. I can click inside the box, I’ll see the cursor inside the box, blinking, awaiting input. And when I type the first letter, it appears, and immediately disappears again. Type it again; it appears, then disappears. Click on the X to “clear” the search box (which has nothing in it), and now the search box will work.

For other problems I’m experiencing, you can reread the above post. You are not experiencing these problems. That’s great, just as it is great that I am not experiencing many of the problems others have mentioned. It doesn’t mean those problems don’t exist. It means something is terribly wonky with this site’s coding, and there doesn’t seem to be much management is doing to correct it.
  • Ted,

That is what I have been saying for a while.
  • I have given up trying to use the upper box for searches ... it is totally useless now. I choose Canada from the drop down box at left and it holds for the first search and then reverts back and I have to o out of Hipstamp, come back in and select Canada again. It is totally screwed up. I now have to price search on Ebay.

Growing old very quickly - hire an IT department - not contractors. .
  • I wonder if it is a browser problem or something like that. The search bar works fine for me.
  • I often have the same problem as Ted. Unable to type letters in the search area and then eventually it works. Who is this loony programmer? They need to find a real job they can actually do. How about sweeping the floor?

  • i am using Firefox and keep updates current. - search for Canada U49 then select Canada from the drop down. Then change U49 to U59. When you activate search the drop down reverts to all - it does not hold to allow another search limited to Canada to take place. . .
  • I’ve used the search function on Brave, Chrome, and Edge. It doesn’t matter. Problem exists on all.

Carol perhaps its the way the search is conducted that causes problems. When I type Canada U49 in the upper search box. Three listings appear. I don't see a need to select Canada from the drop down. That step seems wasted to me. I can then change the 4 to 5 in the search box. No listings appear. Just to make sure the system wasn't providing bad information, I opened a new search box and typed Canada U59. No listings are currently available. I then changed it to 101 (without typing Canada again) and 262 listings appear. The search engine seems OK to me. I use Chrome.
  • Interesting, but if you select Canada with U49 selected the quantity changes from 3 to 4. I don't recall Stampwants, Bidstart or even SG behaving this way - nor do I recall this behavior here prior to the changeover and I look up pricing on everything I list so have done this a few tens of thousands of times (had 10000 listings prior to SG and started from scratch rather than trust the transfer afterward). .

Carol you will note that the extra listing does not belong. I believe the reason that it doesn't come up is because it does not have "Canada" in the title. The seller added this stamp to the wrong category. Therefore it is not a programing problem, but a user problem which is impossible for HipStamp to control. The only solution is to notify the seller of the problem and hope he corrects it. I sent this seller a message.
