Scott 2022 Edition of Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers

Just received this new catalog today. Started paging through it starting at about the 1980 issues (I don't handle the much before 1950 - those issues never interested me). At first I was just checking the pricing on various issues. But when I got into the 1990's I noticed that Scott is now picturing every perforation variety of a particular issue. There are now as many as ten or even twenty pictures where before there might have been one or two. Also pictured are each variety where the date is given in the bottom with different sizes of type, with blow-ups of some of the dates so a comparison can be made - this will be very helpful to me since I nearly go blind trying to measure the difference between 1.5 mm and 1.8 mm. Also each issue has a picture with the listing, even though it might have a different variety listed previously - Scott used to show the picture with the initial listing and then just referenced that picture with every subsequent listing - this is no longer the case. For those like me who sell the newer United States issues from the past forty years, this will be very helpful.

My previous catalog edition was 2019, so these changes were made since then. Is this new with this edition or have these changes been present for the past couple of years?

Now I can only hope this similar changes are being made with the worldwide listings. I hate looking through the early Kuwait issues where Great Britain stamps have been overprinted but the British stamps themselves are not pictured. So one has to drag out another catalog and start to cross-reference.

At least Scott is making changes in their catalogs, with the changes that I listed being very helpful to myself. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, or so I have heard. Useful changes, what a nice concept.

  • And I will be listing my 2019 edition Scott US Specialized Catalog for sale in the next few days. Check the catalog listings early next week.
  • That's annoying... they still don't have the eCatalog up yet. You'd think they'd be able to get the file listed before the printed book was released. Been watching the page for days now, and it's still not there.
  • Amos is still in the publishing version of the Dark Ages. They should have issued an annual on-line catalog subscription a long time ago so subscribers could call up the latest catalog info on their phones, tablets, laptops, etc. from anywhere instead of having to carry a heavy book around. The US Specialized by Grade catalog would be the place to start.
  • I thought in the 2022 edition, they removed the grading pages, and put them in a separate book.
